It's two completely different things. One is adding a descriptive point of interest, which users may find helpful, whereas your example is the actual name of the stop - something GNE have no control over.

Stop names come from the NaPTAN database, which i believe is the responsibility of local authorities to update and maintain data within their areas. Looking at the latest version, High Fell Club is still listed.

I'd suggest GNE would be quicker in changing the announcement, should Morrisons or whichever business it mentions, be taken over.

i was actually going to post that i realise GNE have no control over takeovers and closures but if they are going to mention them in the OSA surely they need to make sure they are up to date. The high fell club has been shut for years. Maybe they should stick to street names which never change?

But then you'd have next stop announcements that don't align to the actual stop names, which is the open data used by everything else...

The NaPTAN database is what needs to be kept up to date, then everything else can follow suit.

The Microbus and Axis are businesses (and not the only businesses there), not points of interest.

"Next stop: Holmeside, for the Port of Call and Subway"

A point of interest is something that someone may find useful or interesting. Just because you don't find it useful or interesting, doesn't mean that others won't.

As with everything on this forum, posters tend take things to the extreme to try and labour their point. Listing every pharmacy, which by their nature tend to be a local services with their own catchment area, would be ridiculous. As would listing every Subway or McDonald's franchise.

On the other hand, buses informing where to alight for places like the Grainger Market, Quayside, Durham Riverwalk or Trinity Square, is likely to prove very helpful to those unfamiliar with the area.

What is it you're actually against here? This particular decision or next stop announcements overall?

Isn't there a difference between a key employment destination vs a pub that's clearly flavour of the month with the MD?

If only he had been drinking at The Nags Head instead, then that pub could have had a mention instead.

Namechecking specific shops, bars, clubs, etc in the NSA outside of the stop's name.

Namechecking places like Grainger Market, Quayside, The Bridges, etc I think is fine, because they're actual places to go and host a whole range of businesses (even if they're a business themselves), and there's likely a whole range of activities to do there.

Haven't GNE changed most of their stops on their NSA system to have different names to NaPTAN? If anything, they've already made them not align to actual stop names so they might aswell keep going?

To be honest there is lots of things named after businesses. Probably a major one is Chester Le Street Corals that as been used for years in printed timetables. Not sure if any other bookies have been used, just know that one as it's the company I work for.

In Howdon you got the Rosehill Club which has been closed for well over a decade.

Out of area in Castlemilk, Glasgow they've got a handful of stops using the name Mitchelhill named after a group of tower blocks that used to tower over the area but were demolished by the mid noughties, it still shown in some bus blinds due to turning circles being located there for short workings.

More amusingly on the Isle of Wight they did have a stop named as "Middle of Nowhere".

I don't have any examples to hand but have noticed the majority have been changed with the same being done on their app and website, some with minor changes and others with completely different names.

I also recall that the NSA's for the 22 in Thornley used to say "Crossways Hotel" even though the hotel had long since been demolished and a housing estate had been built in it's place.

But they're stops outside an established location. Not a stop with a name already and some sort of free advert attached to it during the NSA.

Have you contacted Nexus about it? They should be able to update the NaPTAN dataset for Tyne and Wear. 

I eventually got them to change Cooks Hall to Fatfield Road, given that Cooks Hall was demolished in 1966 and the vast majority of people using the stop would have had no idea it was ever there. The Jolly Potter at Newbottle has also changed, which is another I'd contacted them about ages ago.

On the more general topic of NSAs, it seems the changes on Sunday have broken many of them. Indeed, the 6 buses I went on today, only 2 of them had working. Getting fixed anytime soon?

I'm not sure if the buses still say Rosehill Club, didn't really notice as last time I was on a Coaster it was about 0630 in the morning when I was heading home after travelling overnight on NatEx from London to Newcastle after my Paris holiday. Google Map doesn't say Rosehill Club, the bus stops say Rosehill Bank towards Wallsend, but Rosehill on the Eastbound stop. Mind the club still stands, just remains closed, actually suprised it hasn't had one of them mysterious fires in all the time it has stood empty, the Eastbound bus stop has been demolished by cars plenty of times since like.

But many use it as a landmark, and most drivers know of it.

I know a lot of Next Stop Announcements that don’t align with the official stop names. 

On the 65/71 route, “Mill Inn- Station Road” has been changed to “Station Road - Seaham Town Park”, I’m sure the stops at the top of Seaham have all been changed too, it’s officially known as “Eastlea Store / Westlea Shops / Mount Pleasant” but I’m sure they’ve changed them to other things, such as “Esso Garage”, “Westlea Road” & “Westlea School” iirc. 

Of course, “Seaham Byron Place” has always existed on NSAs/timetables despite the official name for those stops being “Seaham Interchange”. 

I can see why in certain circumstances renaming them helps better reflect where the stops are/provides more modern day identifiers, but I personally disagree with this format of renaming stops. A passenger who infrequently travel could be waiting to hear “Eastlea Store” before alighting which may it seems never come… Also, on shared corridors do we have two operators calling the same bus stop two different names?

People in South Shields still refer to "Westoe Bridges", which were lifted in the mid 1990s, (and were near the infamous Westoe Netty) and "Westoe Fountain", which hasn't been there since the early 90s I believe. It's close enough to the Fountain Inn to be confusing and far enough away to be a major pain in the proverbials if you mix them up!

To be honest, I've not noticed what it's referred to on the NSA's. Almost deaf to them. 

However talking about NSA's, it appears there's issues with timings. That or the X45 goes the long way around now to replace all those culled or reduced services

That's nothing new. I've been on plenty of buses that said it'll terminate 5 minutes ago for example.

I meant I get historical sites or old pubs…I do and Amazon is clearly another ball park…however…..with this micro bus railway quarter nonsense.

Gateshead Council and the tourist board call it….The Bridges quarter

The Railway Quarter is in Newcastle around the Stephenson Workshop.

Heading into Newcastle the stop calls out askew road…the stop for most high frequency services nearest the Tyne Bridge, Hilton Hotel, the Sage, Gateshead Quays…basically anywhere that’s not a tiny pub with 4 tables in it as Railway Quarter and Microbus.

Why not the Central Bar which has been there since the 1800s or Station East similarly? It’s cronyism and it’s nothing to do with promoting enterprise. It’s clearly the MD and his commercial teams fancy of the month because they tweet dead nice things about buses. They haven’t updated service changes NSA but had time for this?
