Back in the day, I remember them being decent.
Although hourly, the combined decker operation on the 725 and 726 carried decent loads and offered a viable alternative to the Durham Road services for those not quite travelling the full length.
However, as with other services, the obsession with the 21 has led to a downward spiral elsewhere.
If branding works as much as we are told it does, frequency, newer vehicles, marketing of fares etc - it will have had a positive impact on the 21 at the expense of the 25/X25.
Then whack in the changing passenger habits (not everyone wants or needs to be in Newcastle), the shambles of the 925 and there's only ever going to be one outcome.
You can replicate that same theme with other services such as the 28 series, 71, 24 and 1 in that area too.
I'd argue a similar effect was seen with the X1/56 and the 57.
Maybe even impacting on the Q1/Q2/51/52.
