Seen some talking about Hill Street in Newcastle about the number of buses and it got me thinking, which bus stop has the most buses stopping at it where you can board a bus?
This has to be an individual bus stop so not split bus stop or a bus station etc.
I'll start it with the Brandling Arms in Gosforth towards Newcastle and Askew Road towards the Tyne Bridge which both have 36 buses an hour, is there any higher?

I reckon The Cannon at Low Fell must be up there.
Nothing for ages and then 6x 21's, together.

The stop at Westoe Road/Wharton Street in South Shields has nearly every bus in Shields going through it. 14 different services I think.

I was about to mention UHND. Off the top of my head (it's round the corner from me) 64, 21/N21, X21, X12, 50, 62, 20, X20, X5/15, The 16s, 52, PR1, whatever GNE and ANE are sending to New College, this week (65, 6, 7, 24?), ED1.
In practice, you stand there for 10 minutes then 3 buses turn up at once.
There's some busy ones by Barnes park.

How many buses towards South Shields use the stop outside the hospice at Chichester?

The ridiculous single stop outside Sunderland Interchange that every service queues to use on Stockton Road has to be in the running too

The stop on Crossgate will be even busier due to serving routes coming into the town via Laygate as well as routes that leave via Westoe Road, but I think the busiest in Shields would be Station Road with only the 10, 516 and E1 not observing the stop.

To be fair, even though most services stop there, in reality it's rarely used compared to Wharton Street, you'll occasionally see someone from the gym but it's hardly a busy stop.
RE: Busiest Individual Bus Stop
Are we talking busy in regards to people standing there at the stop or are we thinking busy as in buses per hour...?
If it is the first then I would say Blackett St for the 39/40 & 62/63 which get very busy even on Evenings/sundays.
And for buses per hour I'd say the stop leaving Gateshead Interchange....

Must admit I had a feeling there might be a stop somewhere like that in South Shields, I was also thinking outside Middlesbrough bus station but I don't know the routes down there.
(03 Apr 2024, 7:51 am)Rob44 wrote all wrong . its the stop at Gateshead interchange for buses heading to Newcastle. Click on this stop on the GNE app and then track buses and the screen is all pretty with different coloured buses!
Just very quickly working it out, it's only 34 buses an hour there, so slightly less than the 2 I said

are we counting the buses that set down there only as per say they are still using the stop?? ( clutching at straws!)

Set down not allowed Has to pick up people haha, Barras Bridge into Newcastle, would probably win otherwise, even known you probably could board there if you were mentally insane.

Ye it is, was on the bus other day and we waited ages for it to get to the shop.
Whos idea was it to have 1 bus stop for all those services?
Ooo Friend, Bus Friend.

Quite why they thought one stop would be adequate I don't know considering it replaced three on Vine Place, however I'm not sure where a second stop would go without major work.

Even using the set down stand in the side bit of the interchange and back onto Stockton Road via Cowan Terrace would be quicker than having the stupid queue system they have created.

(Edited): It's a shame they couldn't do something like the above to create a better link for buses going East tbh. Just checked the plans for it and there's nothing though, seems such a simple scheme and would better connect Park Lane for pedestrians aswell. There does seem to be a path though.

Yeah would have been good if they did something like that – just had a look too and plans suggest not. Will at least be good to see pedestrian access restored… the old metal pedestrian ramp that was there for decades was well used till they decided to cut off all the pedestrian routes other than Holmeside when they got rid of the ramp, the market and the rights of way through the civic. More superb planning.

Yeah, would've literally gave the buses a stop in the interchange aswell without actually serving it so most people could get a bus there.
Agreed though with the pedestrian connections, mind it was all grotty typical 1960's/1970's planning. Some horrid horrid schemes got through that time and sadly Sunderland has a lot of it. Not as bad as Gateshead and the East side of Newcastle mind which still really blights both to this day.

Station Road has 46 buses per hour weekday daytime. It's relatively quiet though.

What's mad is that it's actually a timing point for the 39s/2s., yet we're told we're not allowed to wait our time there, but also, don't operate early!
