Sure someone will know the reasons. Sure we have had a pilot or two on here in the past.

I'm certain you can use autopilot to land. AFAIK Japanese Airlines have come into a lot of controversy because of this - such as the Asiana crash in SFO. Apparently it's the pilot culture over there.
