Unite are looking after the interests of their members, which is the purpose of a Trade Union. It's the purpose of a business, such as Go North East, to look after the interests of their customers.
It's unfortunate that ordinary people get caught in the middle of disputes, but a strike wouldn't apply much leverage if it didn't cause any disruption. That's what it's for, after all, to attempt to force an employer's hand to being reasonable. No one takes a decision to strike lightly.
