From what i can remember, the then 2A/2C didnt replace service X2. Can't remember if the 8 (then X8) replaced it either but again, i dont think it did.

It was the 8 first then when the 8 moved to via Hylton retail, the only buses to Washington on Chester Road, Hastings Hill is the 2/2A.

The 2/2A was longer way to the Washington Galliries, the 8 was classed as slightly quicker.

Changes at the time for the X2 etc can be found here:

I Know this doesn't interest much people but Does the Streetdecks currently on delivery have Voith Diwa.6 , ZF Ecolife or Daimler G90AMT Gearboxes?

After looking at old timetables, i can confirm my suspicions about the X8 (now 8A) and 2A/2C (now 2/2A) not replacing service X2 between Sunderland and Washington directly. They may, however have contributed to its withdrawl in layer years.

I have posted 3 images below. One of which is the Red Arrows and Lime timetables, both from 28th October 2007 and the cover and map from the Silver Arrows timetable from 26th October 2008. With them both referencing (well, only one does that), I think service X2 was replaced indirectly by the services rather than one replacing the other straight away. (I'll have to do 3 dofferent posts to get all the attatchments up - hoefully i do it quickly enough so they all merge)

I'm not sure then but according to the changes on the link above it says:

Service X2 - Will be withdrawn and replaced by Lime route 8 between Washington & Sunderland with an identical route as it is now and also replaced by service X1 between Washington & Newcastle.

By the sounds of it, the 8 did directly replace the X2 between Sunderland & Washington.

Aha. Ive worked out what it is.

There was a time when the X8 was withdrawn and replaced with an extended 8 running from Castleside to Chester-le-Street (had previously changed to an X8 at Stanley). The 8 was later extended back to Sunderland, via the same route as previously (and also the X2 route) and replaced with service V8 between Stanley and Castleside.

That will be how the X2 was replaced.

I am going off my memory here and may be wrong but:

The 8 was Stanley - Castleside initially.
The X8 was Sunderland - Stanley.

The X2 was replaced by the 8.
The 8 replaced the X8 and stopped running to Castleside.

Thats exactly how it was, only without the period of time when the 8 ran between Castleside and Chester-le-Street. The Stanley - Castleside section was replaced by service V8.

You worked it out before I had a chance to remember!

The 2a/c were replacements (in part) to the 73/74.
The latter two did a circular route - similar to the 2a/c between Sunderland - Galleries, but it also did Waterview Park and parts of North Sunderland.
Essentially merging parts of the 185/6, 638 and 777 into one circular route.

I think the 73/74 had an additional prefix of a 7 in for a very short time.
