(15 May 2016, 4:58 pm)Malarkey wrote So yesterday morning after many weeks of debating, I went out and purchased a Nikon D5200 (DSLR Camera) from Argos for £349.99, after a quick set up and an hours charge at home I headed out for a few photos and I wasnt disappointed by the quality of the camera, which made for an enjoyable afternoon using the RAW+Fine settings.

A few photos from yesterday can be seen on my Flickr Page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/adammalarkey/

Nice buy! You may want to avoid the auto mode though (green option on the dial), given that the flash will auto fire if the camera deems it required. If you switch to the next option clockwise, it'll do the same but disable flash activation.

Thanks for that Adrian I will change the setting now.

Might be worthwhile reading through a few 'how-to' guides. The automatic mode is alright when it's sunny, but if it's a dull or rainy day, it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

I will have a look through them at some point to further familiarise myself with the settings of the D5200.

I've had cameras before that try to illuminate the sky in such situations!!

Camera Suggestions
Can people suggest me a camera that's good in price and quality. I've started posting on my Flikr and I'm using my iPhone 5S to take the pictures which is taking my storage.

RE: Cameras
How would I go about converting photos which are (NEF Files) to a JPEG, as Flickr doesnt recognise the file type, What is really weird is that the images show up on my Camera as being JPEGs, I had been using the NEF (RAW) JPEG Fine Settings on my new D5200, which I also used last weekend, and then uploaded photos without any problems. Some of the photos on my Computer are down as (NEF Files), while others are (JPEGs) despite using the same settings, Malarkey is quite confused as to what has happened here mind.

I think software like photoshop elements, with the right plug ins, can do that sort of stuff.

You'll need Nikon's NEF codec - http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en...sw/62.html

I've just noticed that the flash is still enabled on your camera, Malarkey.

It's not so much of an issue during the day (the only problem is that the registration plates appear to be lit up), but if you're ever taking photos in the dark, this could potentially blind the driver.

As Adrian said; if you're not wishing to try out manual settings yet and you want to stick with automatic settings, all you have to do is twist the mode dial from the green option to the dial to the circle with a squiggley line in the middle of it (the next option clockwise):

Reiterating the above... It's still enabled, Malarkey!

The registration plate and driver's high vis are both clearly illuminated within this photo:

I'm stuck with a Galaxy S6 right now!
I feel it can be really clear as seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jamiepic/2...otostream/
But on night shots I don't even stand a chance due to the light/blur. Has anyone got any general tips for taking pictures with the phone - short of buying a camera? I've not experimented with the settings, more just stuck in on auto and let the phone decide what's best.
Input would be appreciated!

Thanks, although the only thing I will have to upload photos with is my phone so I don't see how that would work annoyingly. Irritatingly I won't really be able to take my laptop with me due to a lack of suitable Internet access (WiFi etc). Really I need someway of getting the photos onto my phone, tried putting the SD card into my old little pocket camera which has WiFi connectivity but I have had no joy with that.

Think my only alternative would be to get a mobile dongle for the Internet to use with the laptop whilst I am away.

Daft question, but why don't you just buy multiple SD cards?

I may potentially have to go for a new SD card as I ain't certain that the one I have will have enough storage.

The issue is, I'm off on a week's holiday to Blackpool next month and someone I know has put his theory in my head that Blackpool Transport's new Palladium standard Enviro 400H City's will enter service part way through my holiday and I would quite like to get a few photos onto my Flickr of them on their first day in service. Sadly where I'm staying doesn't have WiFi so I need to find some other way of uploading the photos.

Just about every Wetherspoons has free WiFi, but its whether you want to be sitting doing that in a strange pub, rather than just waiting a few days to upload them. Tongue

I thought you were off to Mars or somewhere the way you were talking! Wink

BT wifi is reasonable enough and there are enough hot spots to pay for, if you aren't a customer.
Mcdonalds and the chain coffee shops all have free WiFi too.

Rather than incur the cost of a mobile dongle it would be worth checking your mobile phone air time allowance to see if tethering is permitted. I find that tethering my laptop to the mobile phone is an ideal solution when staying in hotels that don't have free WiFi.
RE: Cameras
Only had my D5200 3 Months, and looks to be in need of repair, as my 18-55mm Lens has jammed, so I can only zoom between 45-55mm and can't even detach the lens from the camera itself either.

Been to Argos they said contact Nikon Support or go on Argos-Support.co.uk, asked if both were open today and they said yes, I then find Nikon are only open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, ohhh and it's bloody bank holiday weekend so they'll closed tomorrow also, and with being at work most of the week, the earliest I can resolve this issue I have is Friday as Argos-Support.co.uk leads you directly through to Nikon also.

I will give Argos Washington a 0/10 for there help today, bloody useless.

Have you dropped it? Or has it been knocked quite heavily? The lens zoom and locking mechanism to the camera body are completely independent of each other, so it shouldn't be a related problem.

Try taking it to an independent dealer, such as the one in Sunderland, as they may be able to fix it for you. This one has been around for years - http://www.charleseaglesandson.com/sunde...branch.htm

Fell off my desk yesterday and it was fine when I checked it, came use it at the MetroCentre this morning and it was completely locked

Don't hold your breath, whatever. Big'un's camera is a rather more basic Nikon, bought from John Lewis for the 2 year guarantee. Conked out after about 11 months, with the battery reading not being good and often defaulting to battery flat so eff off mode. Got it completely replaced under warranty, but took a full month via an independent.

RE: Cameras
Any cameras that are under a... somewhat budget range and are capable of low light shots? My S6 is failing me.

I hold no preference over standard or dSLR (I'm not very technical with cameras... lol), but my google searches got me no way nearer to the answer. By 'capable' I mean without tonnes of light flare, and a decent enough picture in the night hours...

Daytime, my S6 can produce great shots, but even so I feel it's time for an upgrade of camera choice..

Good choice Jamie. I always consider that you aren't a photographer until you actually have a proper camera. Especially when the phones have the downside of people ringing you when you have that one off shot you're in the middle of taking.

My camera of choice at the moment is the Canon Powershot SX410.

It won me the Photo of the year catergory for scenic photo on here.

Also here is two examples of night shots I've done with it (freehand too)

I currently also have a DCR-SX30E recorder which I've just found.
It's 720p (Not quite HD), it apparently has low light capturing, so I'll have a go with that tonight to get an idea. It's by far the best digital camera I personally own, so it will give an idea of whether dSLRs are needed for the small pieces of work I do. I don't plan on using it as primary because it's main function is recording, so I feel as if it won't be too good.
Will report back with examples of my work tonight for further discussion!
