Euro 6 credentials & road stripes being added to more buses

Rather random though. How did Red Kites represent environmental credentials?

Newcastle Clean Air Zone (CAZ):

“Subject to government approval, charges for non-compliant taxis, buses and HGVs would begin from 30 January 2023.”

“Cabinet members will also be asked to agree further support measures, including additional exemptions for a small number of vehicles such as rail replacement buses and coaches, bus and HGV driver training vehicles, breakdown recovery vehicles, hybrid vehicles and taxis and vans belonging to people living within the CAZ area.”

Was looking on the government website to see how much it was for a vehicle to be charged, I checked a Euro 5 B7TL and thats £50 to enter but for a Euro 5 Streetlite its free.
Must be depending on their age as the B7RLE's need to paided to be allowed into Newcastle.
Looking at the 2013 and 15 lites it is the age of the vehicle as the 2013 ones cant enter but 2015's can

Can someone please explain to me why this won't affect private cars?
RE: Euro 6 credentials & road stripes being added to more buses
So if Hybrids are exempt, would this mean that any of 6056-70 could be sent on the 47 and X71/X72 into Newcastle if needed?

they cant.
Anything Younger than 7 enter free if Euro 5
Anything older than 7 are charged if Euro 5
London type vehicles enter free such as 2099

Because it's not caused by cars mostly, most the blackspots are where buses idle (Blackett Street and Market Street in particular) and are also where people are.

Also it's unfair as it's effectively a poverty tax on the poor.

…what about Tyne Bridge & Central Motorway East?
RE: Euro 6 credentials & road stripes being added to more buses
The biggest cause of congestion in newcastle is caused by private cars, remove them, you remove the congestion, air quality changed during lockdown when there was very few cars on the road and mainly only buses

but i thought this was about emissions rather than congestion?  100 nissan leafs trying to go through newcastle would cause congestion but 3 bus sitting on market street with there engines running cause more emissions.
RE: Euro 6 credentials & road stripes being added to more buses
Congestion causes high emissions, same as poorly timed traffic lights, free flowing traffic causes less emissions than constantly stopping and starting, so remove the congestion and you cut emissions into the air

But has been said many times before, the emission hot spots are mainly those dominated by bus or used heavily by bus. https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/nor...n-15893433
Blackett Street, Moseley St and Market St aren't exactly full of cars and you've got Percy St that has its obvious limitations and traffic management for car drivers. Neville St and Gosforth High St are both on the list, despite the huge investment in bus priority measures.

A fleet of half empty buses following each other in and out of the town isn't an effective use of resource, regardless of the pollution or emissions being pumped out.

Of course there's a whole different argument about why theres a fleet of half empty buses going in and out of the town, but that's probably for another thread.

Yes but the congestion i mention above was caused by 100 electric cars ie the nissan leaf. so just because there is congestion does equate to loads of emmision. I've sat in my car trying to get over the tyne bridge with windows open and not had a problem. But ive also walked down blacket street towards the black garter for a pint and been coughing my guts up due to the stuff coming out of the buses along there.

Admit those two are the outliers but that's more about the absolute shambles traffic management at the Gateshead side of the water which causes a bottleneck.

Hard to fix those two without some serious alternative getting traffic out of the centre (lack of crossing to the East since the Tunnel costs anyway) or serious investment in public transport which lets be honest neither will happen.

It's a hard one to fix when journeys like Team Valley to Walker take 50 minutes outside of peak times or driving I believe it's 15 minutes or so.

There was less buses aswell, mostly running on Sunday timetables, which are tighter so there's less idle time and since there was less buses the old crap like the MAN's and older Enviro's were sitting in the depot SORN.

The problem around eldon sq bus station is compounded at busy times by car drivers queuing to get in a car park, blocking the junction and sometimes backing up to the gate or the boulevard.  I think most will agree that if the car parks weren't right next to the bus stations it wouldn't be quite as bad.  Imagine it's pretty hideous there today with Magic Weekend at the stadium too.

It's been a couple of years since i've been up Gosforth, but my memory even 2 years ago is of 02, 07, or 57 plate deckers flooding the place right up and down the high street - which have only relatively recently been sent to pasture at Alpha.  To be honest walking up from the school up the high street wasn't a pleasant experience because of that - I have no idea what they're putting on there now, but it surely has to be better than what was there.

With the best will in the world, and the best efforts of RIBAS and moaning at by management, drivers aren't going to turn off their engines in the depth of winter - 1 because the heating doesn't actually blow hot when it's on ignition, and 2, there's a reasonable chance some won't restart.

It was in the Peter Huntley era. Buses had a sticker on the bank window with the number of red kites denoting the euro rating. So two red kites meant it was a euro 2 bus. At the time euro 5 was the highest rating and that was shown as 1 red kite soaring high.

Honestly didn't know it was a red kite, just a bird flying.
Euro 5 was single bird in flight with circle round it

Once it’s converted, yes. Hasn’t been done yet as the exhaust needs a slight change as it’s different to the 05/06 plate Volvo B7s.

How long does it take for a Euro 6 conversion?

Does the length change when converting Euro 4 buses to Euro 6 compared to Euro 5 to 6?

No.

This is the type of thing GNE would normally be criticised for - “wasting money”.
