For North Tyneside, maybe I would extend the 80 beyond Wallsend and onto Walker via Fossway, Scrogg Road and Wharrier Street to create new links to the Cobalt and North Tyneside Hospital from the East End of Newcastle.

Or, if I was really naughty, extend the 40/41 into Newcastle (perhaps beyond if I was really, really wicked) via the current Stagecoach 40 route which would again create new links to the Cobalt from the East End. However, if this were to happen, I wonder how long it would take before some for 'magically' branded buses started to appear?

These routes would provide competition and consumer choice for customers who live in Northumberland as an alternative to using Arriva. Services X50 and X51 would be operated using Volvo B9TL Gemini 2's and with the same specifications as the Tyne Tees Express. Service X52 would be operated by Mercedes Benz Citaro's. The brand name for the three routes below would be COAST EXPRESS.

About to go off topic here but I would like to suggest the following changes around Seaham/Hetton/Houghton/Sunderland.

Service 71 Chester-Great Lumley-Fencehouses-Houghton-Seaton-Seaham.
Extend it on from Houghton to Seaham via Seaton & Station Road. Increasing frequency between Seaham & Houghton as well as opening new connections along the route.

Service 238 (38A) Sunderland-Ashbrooke-Hollycarrside-Ryhope-Seaham-Northlea-Dalton Park
Renumber the 238 to 38A, possibly brand the service? And run it as present to Northlea but then to Dalton Park instead of Houghton (as 71 will cover that) this would bring back a link to Dalton Park which was lost after 24th March Changes. As well as brand new service to Dalton Park from South Sunderland other than the 'Stockton Road Corridor'.

Service X35 (Evenings: Sunderland-Doxford International-Houghton-Hetton-South Hetton-Easington-Peterlee)
I would like to see an evening service brought in between Sunderland & Peterlee, this opens up new connections in evenings and makes bus services simpler as it could reduce all 35C/35B, as again I'm not keen with using loads of letters it gets confusing.

Service 35/35A.
35 & 35A unchanged on Daytimes, 35 to Low Moorsley via Hospital & Durham Road & 35A to Rainton Bridge via Burn Park Road & Silksworth. Evenings & Sundays, run one simple 35 serving both Hospital & Silksworth terminating at Low Moorsley.

Service 61/61A (61 via Stockton Road, 61A via Station Road & Seaham Interchange)
Daytime 61 unchanged. Evenings I would like to see a 61A introduced from Mill Inn operate to Seaham Interchange, Byron Place via Station Road & Viceroy Street. Then back up to Graham Way and as 61 to Murton. On Sundays half-hourly service, one bus as 61, one bus as 61A. The idea to bring later evening and sunday buses between Murton, Dalton Park & Seaham. This would also provide a service to the Station Road area on Sundays & later evenings.

Service X5
Newcastle-Gateshead-Heworth-Boldon-Fulwell-Sunderland-Grangetown-Seaham-Dalton Park
This service would operate hourly replacing the X3. Running the same route as the X3 to Park Lane then same route as X7 to Seaham then up to Dalton Park. This brings a number of new connections and hopefully make the X3 passenger numbers go up.

Frequencies as normal or as specified.

Yes, used to be every 6 minutes officially using minibuses.

I cant understand why service 39 is still on between Pennywell and Sunderland Interchange, l understand if Gentoo decides to build houses on the old Pennywell Estate, but theres no reason for this service as Chester Road is heavily used by bus traffic and if theres a need for a service then why not divert the 2A or 2C or both round the 39 route between Grindon Mill and Hastlings Hill as the 8 and 78 can still be used on the Grindon Mill and Hastlings Hill section.

Just been looking at the Current and Old timings of services between Newcastle and Sunderland and it appears that running an Xpress Service via Washington Village and Washington Galleries to Newcastle is just as quick as operating an Xpress Service via Boldon and Heworth to Newcastle, I am taking about the X3 and X85 of course, which I find very Interesting.

Current Form

56 – Newcastle – Concord - Sunderland – 72 Minutes
X3 – Newcastle – Heworth - Sunderland – 56 Minutes
X36 – Newcastle – Heworth - Sunderland – 61 Minutes

Old Form

X2 – Newcastle – Washington - Sunderland - 56 Minutes
X4 – Newcastle – Washington - Sunderland – 60 Minutes
X85 – Newcastle – Washington - Sunderland – 57 Minutes

Now I think if GNE wanted to, they could make this link even faster by using the following route

Sunderland Interchange - Queen Alexandra Bridge - A19 to Boldon Motorway Exit - Heworth Bypass Direct to Gateshead ommiting Heworth - Newcastle Eldon Square

Basically, this suggestion links the two termini together to form a new circular service. The route between Doxford International and Pennywell would be: A690, Durham Road, Thornley Close Road, Thorndale Road, Tilbury Road, Tay Road, Gravesend Road, Gleneagles Road, Gartland Road, Sevenoaks Drive, Pennywell Industrial Estate and Prestbury Road (or Hylton Road - depending on which way the bus is routed in/out of Pennywell). Provides new links from Ryhope, Tunstall and Doxford Park/International to Thornley Close and Grindon in addition to an alternative/direct link to Pennywell.

I think your 39/39A is a good idea but Stagecoach have the 16 and 23 every 10 mins with the 23 though Thorney close and the 16 for Hastings Hill and the Hospital also Stagecoach have the 18/19 and 5/5A around them area's, i can't see people ditching Stagecoach for GNE, i can't see them getting many people but its defiantly better than the current 39 route.



I wish Stagecoach would make changes to their services, most of the routes have being the same for years... the current 18/19 isnt working because the only time its busy is between 8-11 and then 2:30-5ish...

i got on the 19 yesterday and he said i was hes first passenger in 1 hour and 30 mins... that's not good.

But why change routes that work? Just because sunderland's network may seem 'boring' because it has barely changed in years atleast you know that the routes are profitable. Unlike Go north east who are constantly changing their sunderland services because the routes are not bringing in enough money to justify running the busses.
On the subject of the 19 it can be a funny route with passengers but it does provide good links to other areas of sunderland without having to change busses in the town.

People can'#t keep up with the amount of changes GNE do. One of the reasons the 36 failed is this I believe and also the fact it didn't run on Sundays and late evenings.

Exactly. Just look at how often Stagecoach make serious network changes. To give the best example I know (Teesside), the last major route revision was the 13 back in 2008 when it, the 3/4 along Portrack Lane and the 60 were combined into the one service. Another example is the12, which until last September, hadn't seen any major route or timetable changes since January 2003 when it was introduced to replace the 52/52A in the Middlesbrough area.

I don't think we can compare different operators making service changes when discussing the feasibility of making changes to the network.

Go North East and Stagecoach run in totally different ways. Why compare the two? One way may be more successful than the other or be more respected by its customers, but that's irrelevant.
If we were to compare different services from the same operator having changes, then I'd be more likely to agree with what is being said.

Go North East's 53/54 services are very successful, and this is demonstrated by the services receiving new vehicles later this year. The timetable hasn't seen any changes since January 2010.
Go North East's X9/X10 services are again, very successful. Timetable hasn't changed since October 2011.
There are some examples which have changed more frequently than others too, but if this is done in an attempt to ensure that timings are perfect and that the reliability of a service is better, I'd prefer to have the service changes performed.
That said, I agree it can sometimes determine whether a service is failing or not. Service X3 being a prime example. Extensive service changes have just taken place because the service was not making enough money.

We really can't compare how operators work, and how they justify whether a service is commercially feasible or not. Where Stagecoach may look at the "full picture" to decide whether a route is successful or not (looking at the overall profit level of a service over a period of time), Go North East may only look at individual runs to determine if the service is successful if it isn't one of their leading services. If the service isn't making enough money, likelihood with Go North East is that it will either get cut even if it is just part of the route (if it doesn't affect later timings greatly) or it will be re-timed. Stagecoach, on the other hand, are happy to run services that are sometimes completely empty for a great period of the run if the service is still meeting or exceeding profit levels over the course of a full day or other given time period.

Little bit off topic, but I wonder if this could work? A link between Newcastle and Chester-le-Street via Washington. Just some rough timings.

The service would start at either Pilgrim Street or Market Street West in Newcastle City Centre and then continue as an express to Gateshead and Heworth.
Gateshead Interchange - 9 minutes
Heworth Interchange - 19 minutes

From there, it would operate as a normal 'stopping' service between Heworth and Washington Galleries via Usworth College, Concord and Albany.
Usworth College - 30 minutes
Concord Bus Station - 35 minutes
Washington, The Galleries - 43 minutes

There's then two options. Running along the current 50 route (via Ayton and Lambton), the service would arrive at Chester-le-Street, South Burns 16-17 minutes later. This would make the total journey time 59 minutes - not really allowing for much of a turn around time.

Alternatively, the service could operate as an express between Washington and Chester-le-Street, South Burns via the motorway, arriving around 11-12 minutes later. This would make the total journey time just short of 55 minutes.

I think it could run as far as Washington, but bringing it to Chester Le Street is pointless. The reason I say that is there are two faster alternatives between Chester Le Street and Newcastle. The 21 will take you there in 45 mins, and the X21 in 30 mins. I couldn't see how Go North East could justify putting a service on that will take 15 mins longer to get to the destination.

There are no real benefits of the route between Washington and Heworth either. From what you've written it just runs the M1 route. Taking into account the 43 mins it would take between Washington and Newcastle, it would make it a slower service than the X1? So no real justification there either.

The only potential benefits I can see are: another fast link between Heworth and Newcastle (aside from the X3/X9/X10?). another link between Chester Le Street and Washington.

I would say

Newcastle to Heworth - 15 Minutes
Heworth to Washington Galleries - 15 Minutes
Washington Galleries to Chester le Street via Motorway - 10 Minutes - Lambton/Ayton - 15 Minutes

In total the journey time is between 40-45 Minutes - Used the X9/X10 and M1 timetables to work out timings, also just looked at the 21 timetable and that takes 38 Minutes from Newcastle to Chester le Street also the X21 from Newcastle takes 30 Minutes.

So it could be quite a decent service timings wise.

It's obviously never going to really happen - just a suggestion. It would give those living between Washington and Heworth an alternative link to Newcastle (faster than the 56 from Concord and doesn't require a change at Heworth to the Metro). Maybe the extension to Chester-le-Street would be a bit pointless, but extending to Waterview Park could help create a link that was lost with the withdrawl of the M2 between Washington and Waterview Park.

Yeah but you have the 73 and the 8 every 30 minutes combined every minutes from Washington Galleries to Waterview Park, so the link is still there. Plus you have the short 8 aswell at peak times

18 Minutes on the X9/X10 from Eldon Square to Heworth, but I used your example from Pilgrim/Market Street which would then take off that 3 Minutes and it wouldn't serve Gateshead High Street either hence the 15 Minutes. Apologies I should of explained a little better.

Is it any different to the 43/44 and 21/X21?
Can't imagine anyone travelling the entire route on the Diamond, when there are quicker alternatives via Chester.

It will be pretty much the same with this suggestion, in that it opens up new options for passengers travelling between various points on the route.

Just a thought you could have the X25 go via Eighton Banks and Oxclose to Washington Galleries, then onto the Motorway to the turn off at the top of Ayton (Where the Holiday Inn is) and along Portbello to Birtley then normal route to Langley Park.

It would reinstate the old X6 Link Between Langley Park and Washington... Probs a bad example, i'll come up with something better.

RE: Service Suggestions
Those 21 suggestions might indeed improve reliability by giving more flexiblity in short workings but GNE dropped the 21A,B etc etc because 'passengers found it confusing apparantly to have more than one 21 service

I can't see the point of a 21A and the X21 you propose, you'd be duplicating.

I take it you wouldn't replace the 28A? Leave the 29 to serve Kibblesworth on a weekday and the 24A to pick up the rest of the slack?
