Hopefully when the 22 goes to Sapphire it will gain more passengers, shame they can't do that to the X21.

Just hope that we don't run into capacity issues than can't be fixed quickly... We were able to fix some of the issues on the 7 and the 5 by running duplicates. The 7 is getting E400's to help boost capacity and hopefully solve the problem!

Which service is the Sunderland to Peterlee section the busiest... X21/22/23?

Not particularly...
The X21 arrives and departs Sunderland empty most of the time outside of peaks. The morning peak run operated by Stockton tends to have more than the normal Darlington peak run, but it's still far from great. No more than ten on this run, usually.
Services 22/23 carry more or less the same amount of passengers now. The old 24 service used to carry more passengers than the 23, but it seems to have evened out with the 23 improving since the Streetlites entered service.

Peterlee - Durham is the busy section on the 22. I'd assume that it's being upgraded to "Sapphire" specification with the hope of improving passenger numbers...

I'd say the 22/23 gets okay passenger numbers but nothing spectacular compared to the GNE 60/61 on the section between Sunderland and Peterlee. X21 is sadly a ghost town most of the time apparently which is a shame, I did the 1615 X21 from Sunderland once and it carried me and one other passenger who got off somewhere along the 21 route in Peterlee.

The 7 I thought was reasonably busy before Sapphire but I think the passenger numbers have shot up on the 7 since it's upgrade to Sapphire although I think other factors helped boost the numbers on the 7 such as the DurhamGate development as there often seems to be passengers boarding/alighting at that stop. More people seem to be using the Darlington Town Centre - Harrowgate Hill section on the 7 and other services I think than before.

I would hope Sapphire does increase the numbers on the 22 and hopefully the new developments at Dalton Park will draw people to use the 22.

Which is a shame, always said Arriva should run more services in its home town...although most area's have a bus route now..so its a massive risk =(.

If people are travelling between Peterlee and Sunderland but don't need to head somewhere that Arriva doesn't operate would possibly more likely to use the 22/23 between Peterlee and Sunderland Park Lane as they are more frequent than the X7 unless there is some factor where people would choose the X7 like connecting from an East Durham service or continuing somewhere Arriva don't operate eg. Stadium of Light.

Also don't forget about the Dalton Park developments which may attract people from the likes of Wheatly Hill and Peterlee to Dalton Park as I think there is going to be a cinema built there? if so it would be the nearest cinema in the area and people may also be drawn to shopping at Morrisons.

I would perfered service 22 and service 24 remain pulsars with sapphire spec

No changes to the 22 or 23 yet, though... Looks like cbma06 was right in suggesting that an Arriva employee was monitoring loadings on the 21 - 23 series between Sunderland and Peterlee.

The X21 is obviously more or less at the end of its six-month probationary period, so it's only right that some sort of changes were planned to combat the buses which are running empty. Hopefully it isn't just a case of timing the X21 to leave 5 minutes ahead of the 22/23 in both directions...

Not sure what is happening yet but the X21 was registered to amend route# and timetable the other day.

I got the X21 today from Sunderland Interchange at 13:15 and the 13:07 service 22 (10 minutes late) pulled into the next stand up from the X21, their was 9 passengers on the X21 with 3 passengers getting off at the stop after grangetown and another getting off at ryhope green and ryhope hospital, roughly about 10 passengers getting on service 22 (fleet number 7456, I think that was the correct fleet number if Durham depot has it), theres been solos running about on service 24 lately.

I wonder what the changes are for service 24, their better not take the service out of my estate again, its like a yo yo over the past few years.

It's more to do with the fact we've had to cover the Leven work believe it or not. The 6 now runs all day which means we have to find an extra bus to do the X12 it used to do, hence the Stockton one will do that then run light to Sedgefield to pick up a 21A at 0921, the Durham bus will go back to do the afternoon one.

They also appear to have altered the timings too, mainly adding extra time between Newton Aycliffe Town Centre and Darlington and reducing the running time between Bishop Auckland Bus Station and Aycliffe Town Centre, considering it can't get to my stop in Aycliffe on-time most days I can see this becoming even more of a joke than it already is to me.
