So the story goes, they were never disposed of after withdrawal due to them having a high residual value left on the books. The intention was to wait until they had depreciated sufficiently before scrap, so they wouldn't make a loss on the disposal of the asset. That was years ago though!
They'd probably get between £1200 and £1500 in scrap value (less if they've removed major components) so it's odd that they wouldn't just send them off for scrap.

Same reason in London there is a multitude of withdrawn buses from time passed just sitting in a yard.
