Incredibly poor that it is considered to be a standard expectation from a vehicle type and from my experiences it is quite common especially on the Daimler engined examples.

It doesn't go unnoticed by general passengers either, remember getting on one of Arriva's on the 22 once and passengers were all looking towards the emergency exit door wondering what the horrific racket was.

I try to dodge them whenever I'm able to.
