I found the experience a bit 50/50. First Arriva bus I boarded; no issue, as the QR code scanned. Second and third Arriva bus, the QR scan detected a bad barcode and neither driver knew what the ticket was, but both waved me on when I said it's 'the new Transport North East ticket'. Metro I had no issues with, nor did I on Stagecoach in the City Centre. It's a shame the QR can't be scanned on Metro or Stagecoach, as if the ETM accepts that, it takes away any question over the ticket being valid or not.
It's rare I use the £2 fare anywhere and end up with a correctly issued ticket. I wonder what would happen if a revenue inspector got on to check tickets, as technically it's invalid if issued short?
I'm surprised the operators aren't more concerned about this, as their passenger data must be awful as a result!
Some Stagecoach companies down south have fitted separate barcode readers on their buses - but it doesn’t seem to be happening up here.
