RE: Redcar depot
(27 May 2026, 5:46 pm)PH - BQA wrote The local allocators are, and have been for a number of years, completely unable to allocate vehicles correctly. The frequency with which 1479 and the 434 Solo(s) appeared on the correct routes was always astonishingly low.

You'd hope that, with the apparent increase in branding with the new MD, those responsible for allocating vehicles would be reminded that they don't just put stuff where they fancy without any thought to how suitable it is.

To be fair it's still a stupid allocation. Not because of the B9TL's but more the fact there's crocks around like 7530 which should be in that role.

They're not fit for purpose for anything more now and having deckers on the 1/2/57/57A is just an overallocation imo.

It's a shame they can't bid for some more schools or something. There's enough crocks around which would be ideal for it which should be nowhere near frontline service bar last resort.
RE: Redcar depot
Saying that.....maybe the B9TL's are probably in better condition than some of the E400 classics.

Until now, GNE have been using 6043-48 on the 47 which is still fairly challenging, considering they were hammered up & down the A19 for 5 year then still deputising for the gutless B5TLs and trips on the 10 & 10A which are both reasonably demanding.
RE: Redcar depot
A quick question regarding Arrivas B9's. Am I right in saying that these were dealer stock vehicles (the same as the batch GNE acquired and then sent of to East Yorkshire)?

Also, I'm sure I read somewhere (possibly from a driver or mechanic on Facebook) that the way Arriva has the gearboxes on these set up, that 6th gear isn't used. Is this the case?

Yes, they were purchased from Dealer Stock - interior wise, they more match those acquired by East Yorkshire around the same time.

There getting warranty work done to them  doesn't mean anything wrong  it's basically there just getting inspection
RE: Redcar depot
I think I read somewhere on here that the newer double decker being a slightly lower height meant they could be used on the 63, which made me wonder, would it be possible to use them on the X93/X94 to go through Stainsacre again?

I'm sure it wont happen and the villagers there will have by now got used to not having a bus service, but the need for double deckers on the route not being able to fit under the bridge was the reason given at the time Stainsacre was omitted.

Only problem there is u got cars parked in stupid places which probably would make it a bit of a challenge
RE: Redcar depot
I remember when I was a kid, the Middlesbrough, Whitby & Scarborough used to go through Charltons, Margrove Park, Boosbeck, Lingdale and Stanghow. Shame they removed it time ago. Would be nice if they have the Morning Whitby & Scarborough Bound X94's go through there and then the Return X94's on the way back. Would possibly encourage people to maybe want to go to Whitby for the day out etc... Also, it would save getting 2 busses. Also, would be nice to have the X93's on Sunday go via there too so people who may want to go to Middlesbrough or Guisborough on a Sunday have access like they would with the 65 instead of getting the 3 and swapping onto the 5. But maybe there just simply isn't enough people to justify it.

Not really what you want especially as there's very little difference in heights, think bridge is 14-0 whilst E400MMCs are 13-10 I think? Remember an E400 getting stuck under Priestgate in Darlington when trying to get round a car that was blocking the road.

Doubt there's the demand and imagine making the route longer would put people off going from Middlesbrough towards Whitby & Scarborough, journey is long enough as it is.

I guess the 96 would've been best placed to serve Stainsacre a few times a day to get people into town, but maybe there's no demand from the locals to reinstate any sort of bus service.

It's one of those rare examples of a village once served regularly (probably for decades, since the start of local bus services) and then a few years ago cut to having nothing.

Must admit I'm surprised a coach company hasn't had a punt down the East Yorkshire Coast tbh, considering there's no rail link for part of it.

I know they haven't left Scotland but if Ember ever came across the border it seems like the ideal route for them to take a punt at. I'm sure there's some demand for an express Middlesbrough - Guisborough - Whitby - Scarborough - Filey - Bridlington - Beverley - Hull service.

I’m not too convinced the point to point demand would actually be there. Realistically the only demand that isn’t actually fully met is Robin Hoods Bay-Whitby-Sandsend as this section has the heaviest loadings along the coast. If there was a suitable turning location in Sandsend, it would be the perfect contender for an Open Top service.

Oh I don't know you know, I think there'd be quite a bit of demand across Scarborough, people coming from Filey / Hull wanting a day trip to Whitby or whatever. Stop at a few of the caravan sites on the way and imo you've got a little goldmine there.

You could probably fill a bus full of punters from the caravan sites alone on a day trip to Whitby really and some of them you can serve directly off the A165 with the huge Blue Dolphin / Crows Nest being a very short diversion, similar with South Shore to the South of Bridlington.

Agreed about the open top bus between Sandsend and Robin Hoods Bay though.

More realistically, anyone wanting to get from hull to Filey or Scarborough by public transport is going to take the train. It’s a long enough journey by car, never mind the bus.
