Or if you want to travel a bit further and ride 158794 which cant be beat.
No pacers for me.

Or another suggestion, Some of Newton Heaths 142s which were refurbed with Mersyrail Seats are quite a experience.

Been sampling a few 142's between Aycliffe and Darlington within the last few weeks, yesterday I got 142079 which wasn't the best but it wasn't too bad.

Its quite nice but you'd have to at least get to York on a different TOC to do the rest of the network.
The 142s round the North East are the better off ones, Because they were refurbished with High Back seating quite a bit ago.

Agreed, 142025 one broke down at Blaydon with me on and 142089 is by far the best

My ears are burning.
142025 is my all-time favourite 142.
The ex-First Great Western batch (of which 142067 is a member) aren't too bad mechanically but the 3+2 bench seating is horrible; the same could be said for the ex Merseyrail units too (although some are furnished with half-working PIS which displays the destination of the train only [sometimes]). That batch are horrible both inside and out in my opinion!
Once suffered 142053 working with one engine from Sheffield to Manchester via the Hope Valley. The route isn't the most exciting but having various drunks on the train (midday on a Thursday) and crawling pretty much everywhere (never got above 50mph) didn't add to that at all...!

i'm not a big fan of the bus benched seating either but I must admit, I do like the vinyl flooring on 142068, not sure if 142067 has the same type of flooring though? Got to say 142029 is the worse pacer interior I have seen with the very original flooring still in tack, not even the bright pink poles of its FGW days brighten that shabby interior up.
The Ex ATN 142's internally are much better, I think what helps is the seating and the fact that the lighting has guarding which makes it looks a bit more "modern" if thats the right word to use.
Too use another example... I find the ex ATN 156's looking a hell of a lot better than the EX FNW 156's with better seats and again guarding on the lights... just having plain tubes exposed and showing just makes it look so old and even though the ex FNW 156's have been refreshed, they look rather worn out inside. Can't wait for Northern units to be properly refurbished because they so need it, hopefully it will be a quality refurbishment at that although I am skeptical on that one.

It seems some units aren't having their branding removed in one go.
Only half of 142022 has had its Northern Rail taken off.

Can't be many as most are ex-ATN. Bench seated ones are typically Newton Heath units or ones that transferred from First Great Western

I think only 2 ex FGW 142s transferred up here, The rest are indeed at Newton Heath mixing with there Mersyrail seat sisters ( Which is a experience if your on one )

142023 is a bus seat pacer although i don't think its an ex FGW as it does not have the bright pink poles unlike some others do.
Regarding the question how many pacers are bus seated in the North East then from my observations it does seem to be the main ones are 142023, 142027, 142029, 142064, 142067, 142068 and 142070 so in actual fact, they are quite rare up here unless electrification has made the allocations more loose these days, I mean there has probably been times where a Newton heath pacer has been allocated to North East diagrams and I have also noted more ex FNW 156's have been allocated in the North East than in the past.

There definitely seems to have been an increase in 156's appearing.
There is usually at least one on the Saltburn line in addition to anything up to Northumberland or along the Tyne Valley.
I had whichever one is in the Settle Line livery at the weekend for the first time in a few years.
A point to note, is that it hasn'the had any of the modifications others have with regard to NSA's or its front blind.

156484 is the S&C Branded 156 and it looked a bit scruffy the last time I seen it.
It seems to be last in the queue for Refurb, Most Heaton 156s have been done I believe.
