Only Arriva will know, but I wonder if the fact they 'had' to brand them as something for Frequenta before the new livery came in, to ensure they could keep it?

It wouldn't surprise me if they always knew they would renumber the 27 to 8 (seems logical to have 8 and 9 on that bit going forward), but branded for 27 in the interim. The low key launch and lack of speed actually branding the buses suggests they didn't really want to push it as 27?

Timetables now appearing online:

5/5a
Apart from being diverted via Cranmore Road, no change to timetable.

7/7a
Journeys on the 7a are revised to serve Valley Gardens when heading towards Kingsmead in both directions. As such, journeys will operate two minutes later from Kingsmead towards Yarm and 3 minutes later towards Stockton, with arrival into Stockton 2 minutes later than present (at xx02, rather than xx00).

8
Timetable currently unavailable but service page is loaded. This replaces the 27/27a and will follow the 27a route.

9
Sunday journeys are retimed to run 35 minutes later than present (xx40 from the Bus Station rather than xx05). First journey from Overfields is now 0903 and first from Middlesbrough 0940 (presently 0932 and 1005 respectively).

15
Weekdays - 4 morning journeys are extended to North Tees Hospital - these being the 0640 and 0710 from Cunningham Drive, and the 0655 and 0723 from Bassleton Court. All afternoon journeys from Roseworth to Thornaby after 1700 will start at North Tees - with just the Bassleton Court departures between 1632 and 1702 termainting at Roseworth. The 1852 from North Tees will terminate at Ingleby Barwick Beckfields at 1942 - offering a new later journey to the Estate from Stockton. The 1815 from Ingleby Barwick Teal Arms is revised to terminate in Stockton High Street at 1901 (currently runs to Roseworth).
Saturdays - The first 5 departures from Thornaby will be extended to North Tees. Afternoon frequency drop remains and all journeys leaving Thornaby after 1620 will run to North Tees.
Sundays - All journeys retimed to run 5 minutes later during the day from North Tees, and four minutes later from Thornaby with additional running time towards the Hospital. Last departure from Thornaby to North Tees now 1919 from Bassleton Court (presently 1810) with the last departure from North Tees being 2010 to Bassleton Court (currently 1855 to Cunningham Drive - last departure to there now 1940).

17/17a/X17
Kingsmead Journeys are diverted to serve the new housing development at Valley Gardens. No extra time added for this.
Evening journeys will be retimed to depart Middlesbrough 5 minutes later (leaving at xx40 rather than xx35) and leave Ingleby Barwick Stainforth Gardens 4 minutes later (at xx07 rather than xx03) arriving into Middlesbrough 2 minutes later (at xx47). The 2140 from Middlesbrough will run the full round trip (rather than terminating in Ingleby as now).
Sunday journeys will run 5 minutes earlier than current, with the exception of the 1935 departure which remain unchanged.

X12
The Framwellgate Moor journeys are withdrawn. As such, the 0725, 0800 and 0835 from Middlesbrough are retimed to run 5 minutes earlier to Durham. There is no change to the evening timetable however.

X22
Weekdays - The short journeys between Stockton and North Tees Hospital are withdrawn (replaced by the revised 15 journeys). The 0926 from Sedgefield will start in Middlesbrough at 0850 and run 5 minutes later from Sedgefield to Peterlee. The 1550 from Middlesbrough will now depart at 1555 and run 5 minutes later as far as Stockton then 7 minutes later from North Tees Hospital to Peterlee. The 1450 from Middlesbrough will run 5 minutes later from North Tees onwards. The 1655 from Middlesbrough will now leave at 1710 and like the 1550, will run 15 minutes later as far as Stockton then 17 minutes later from North Tees, arriving in Peterlee at 1840. From Peterlee, the 1520 and 1620 will now depart at 1525 and 1625 - the 1525 runs 5 minutes later throughout as will the 1625, which retains the extra 5 minutes added from Wingate onwards. The last departure at 1725 will depart at 1730 and run 5 minutes later throughout arriving in Middlesbrough at 1855.
Saturday - the last departure from Middlesbrough will run 15 minutes later at 1705. The last three departures from Peterlee will run 5 minutes later throughout at 1525, 1625 and 1730 respectively.

And one still has half of it it missing on one side!
Wonder what the frequency of the 8 will be. If every 15 mins like the 9 then Thorntree and Netherfields will have their frequency halved!

If its 8 an hour then either it will be irregular (like the 64/64A) or else it won't be evenly spaced with the 9 to Morrisons.

I've already asked this question. The 8 will run every 8 minutes on weekdays and every 12 on Saturdays
Any new on the X21 Darlington/Peterlee-Sunlderland

The 8 timetable is now online:
https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/north-east/s...n=outbound

Basically, Monday to Friday it's a different departure slot every hour (similar to how the Stagecoach 39 used to be) between 0840 and 1620. Before 0840, departures from the Bus Station are every 20 minutes and after 1620 until 1730 it's every 10 minutes. After 1730, there's a departure at 1745 (full round trip) and 1800 (terminate) before reverting to the present evening times of xx50 - with a new late departure at 2250.
Saturday, the frequency is every 12 minutes (but looks to remain 6 buses as now - can't honestly see them only getting a minute recovery in the bus station) after 0930 (before which, it's every 15 minutes - until 0859 from Netherfields) until 1630 when it reverts back to every 15 minutes from the Bus Station (after 1700, it's every 30 minutes from Netherfields until 1814 when it goes hourly).
Sundays remain more-or-less unchanged - half hourly frequency until 1750 when it drops to hourly. The current 1850 from Middlesbrough, which is a round trip, will be revised to terminate at Netherfields.
Evening journeys will also revert to serve the daytime route within Middlesbrough - Cineworld will no-longer be served by Arriva.
Surprised they think they can run the 5/5A without any extra running time via Cranmore Road, especially pulling out onto Ormesby Road.

They're tight for time as it is now they've removed Brotton out of the 5A. They will struggle time & loads wise going down Cranmore with the current timetable.

Last two Peterlee to Sunderland journeys withdrawn - last Darlington to Sunderland departure will be 1520. Peak time journeys retimed (in the same way the X22 Peak journeys are retimed).

That's about the Durham area changes - the X21 falls under the Teesside changes in February.

Looks like they've done the same with the 6 as the 22/24 and given it a bit longer to get there and back. Not sure how much longer, but buses to Durham from spenny look to be about 5 minutes later.

Not sure if it would fix much as when the 6 runs late, it runs spectacularly late, to the point of running in threes.

Very little use on College Road to be honest and they'll still have more frequent options at either end...

44 not going to Morpeth any more?

According to Quorum Business Park the x7 and x8 will go directly to Four Lane Ends from Quorum missing out Balliol Business Park from 18th March.

This may be a bit of stretch but given the fact that the 552 has been extended to incorporate the Nexus contracted service 496, perhaps the 51 is being merged with the W1/W1a.

Possibly yeah, not sure how that would work but guess some parts of the W1/W1A would have to suffice with a hourly service.

The 51 is always overcrowded between Newcastle and Benton Asda, so good so see it's being improved.

If any of the above are to improve reliability, a simple 'rejigg' of the times isn't going to solve many of the issues with or without roadworks. Extra buses and extra running time to deliver real improvement is what is needed, not a 'pack em in and run em' late approach. Seen it too many times particularly with the 306 / 308 and rejigging the times 5 minutes here and there isn't going to improve reliability. Adding time and maybe an extra bus on some of the routes will!
I think Arriva are doing quite a good job with the X7 and X8 despite roadworks. Extra buses have been added to the cycle so some peak journeys are given 22 minutes layover at the Haymarket (eg the 17:07 X8 comes from the 16:45 X7 arrival). I dont think extending running time on these routes is a good option because on many days, especially Friday the traffic at Longbenton is not bad so the bus has to wait time at Quorum. Adding running time would just increase waiting time on many trips. As long as they are getting buses away from Newcastle and Blyth on time then I think thats the best they can do. Some other services such as the 308 may also benefit from extra buses.

Newcastle is probably a big issue with all the Blyth services, plus X21/X22 etc and you can only have a bus on stand for so long in Haymarket because otherwise you would have buses stuck outside sat on Piercy Street, bad enough as it is at times.
The following information was released by Quorum Business Park.

X7/X8 Service
Newcastle City Council originally advised the Killingworth Road would be re-opened on 28 Feb 2018, however the closure has been extended until the summer (date tbc) as there are complications with the utilities works. Newcastle City Council have been subsidising the diversion of some Arriva buses during the closure, the funding for that runs out at the end of Feb (despite the road still being closed) as a result;

  • from the 18 March 2018 the X7 will leave Quorum and go straight down Benton Lane then turn right at Four Lane Ends, rather than diverting through Balliol and Longbenton first. This is actually a good thing for people working at Quorum as it will make the bus journey to town a lot quicker on the X7 bus.

  • The X8 will still travel through Balliol and Longbenton before heading to Newcastle. There are just some minor changes elsewhere on the route

NOTE the X7 and X8 bus do not stop at Four Lane Ends, they just travel past it.

Change to the 555 Service

  • The 555 will no longer travel to the Regent Centre after the last journey to Four Lane Ends as there wasn’t enough people using the service to make it commercially viable.

NOTE: we are aware of the issues with some of the morning services not operating to timetable, I have reported this to Arriva and they are running off some reports to see if any more tweaks to the service are required. We are hopeful that the service will return to a 25-min loop when the Killingworth road re-opens in the summer.

Service 52 and 54
Arriva have been monitoring passenger numbers on their evening services and they have recorded very few people using them. Some of the evening routes are no longer commercially viable and as a result:

  • The number 52 bus to Newcastle at 21:05 will be withdrawn from 18 March 2018

  • The number 54 bus to Newcastle at 21:19, 22:06 and 23:06 will be withdrawn from 18 March 2018

NOTE: Arriva have applied for some funding from Nexus to subsidise the evening buses on the 54 services so there is a chance that they may come back on in the future. If the withdrawal of the services affects any of your staff please provide me with details so I can pass them onto Arriva to support the application of the subsidy.

Most timetables will change again in the summer when Killingworth Road is re-opened.
There is also details from Northumberland County Council about these changes. In general its just minor timetable changes however service 44 is being withdrawn between Dinnington and Morpeth.

Might have to take my comments back about the 306 / 308. Can't seem to make out the NCC literature (which might contain mistakes) and only the final timetable will confirm but looking at this, the 308 looks to be as follows if it gets more time:

Blyth Departures: xx:10, xx:25, xx:40, xx:55
Newcastle Arrivals: xx:16, xx:31, xx:46, xx:01
Newcastle Departures: xx:23, xx:38, xx:53, xx:08
Blyth Arrivals: xx:26, xx:41, xx:56, xx:11

Hope the final timetable confirms the above and Arriva have finally seen sense to provide an extra bus with increased running / recovery time.

Hopefully a replacement will be sourced! Could even be a case of amending the S1 to operate the 44 route between Stannington and Morpeth.
