What happens when they are underground as I would not think the GPS would work say at Haymarket or Monument?

Signal repeaters were installed in the tunnels long before the GPS net stop technology was introduced to allow passengers to use mobile phones in tunnels.

Ah OK, I am with EE and my phone does not work in the tunnels, cannot even get a reception on the platform at Gateshead Metro

I can't on my EE phone either for some reason, but voice and text works fine on my O2 phone.

I can't get any signal as soon as I pass the ticket barriers at Gateshead. I regularly jump on the first Metro and get off at Gateshead Stadium just so my waiting time for the Metro can be a little bit more tolerable.
Similar story at all of the underground stations, minus Sunderland and Park Lane.
I am with Three.
Interesting...

What Nexus said in October 2011:
"The refurbishment programme, which will continue until 2014, is being managed by DBTW against rigorous timescales, while ensuring it has no impact on the day-to-day operation of Metro, which requires more than 80 of the fleet at peak times."
What Nexus said in February 2014:
"The £30m modernisation of Tyne and Wear Metro trains has reached the halfway mark, with the project on schedule to be completely finished by May 2015."
What Nexus said yesterday:
"The £30m refurbishment of the Tyne and Wear Metro’s train fleet has been successfully completed, five months ahead of schedule."
Easy to finish ahead of schedule if you keep changing what the schedule is.
Service suspended Shiremoor-Tynemouth Platform 2, passengers are advised trains are running through Platform 1

Tyne and Wear Metro
There are minor delays to trains running between Northumberland Park and South Shields due to a train being withdrawn from service. Please leave extra time for your journey.
Superb service this evening - the next four services on the boards are all towards South Shields, meaning that there isn't another South Hylton train for at least 56 minutes..?
Metro Inspector was unable to provide an answer for the delays, when approached by customers.

It's to do with the Modernisation Work South Hylton trains don't generally come up.

Bloody hope that's the case..!
Mine was on the boards when it was due in 2 minutes, but could see no further trains for South Hylton when the "This train is for South Hylton" message disappeared.
Just left Brockley Whins and there was one South Hylton train on the board, but couldn't see the time for when it was due.

Did the Metro make it through without being hit with stones?

Won't make a difference - it's filthy anyway, so you couldn't see any marks off the stones!

There are no trains running between Wallsend and North Shields in both directions, this is due to a vehicle hitting a Metro bridge. We will update you once we have more information.

Notice how they actually give you the details, when it's not them at fault?

That's what baffles me - sometimes they are so forthright with providing service updates, and other times they seem not to have a clue..?
It's certainly a lot better to provide more information than too little, mind, and they are usually pretty good at communicating delays.
4035 had Gosforth Depot instead of South Hylton on the Blind.
Reserve unfurnished Metrocar 4040 is on train 102 today.
There are no trains running between East Boldon and Sunderland in both directions until further notice. This is due to obstruction on the line. I don't seem to be getting the actual alerts on delays, but I get an email every morning and night informing of a good service.

I wasn't aware there was a sort of e-mail alert to notify everyone of delays and disruption (at least when it works)? Would be incredibly handy for me, as I rarely check the Social Media pages until I am stood on the platform and see the delay.

If you go on the Nexus website, it's under Metro then Travel Alerts I think.

It never works though - it only works when they tell people about the 'good service' that they're running with two lines closed/suspended...
It won't be long until they send emails at 0100 about their good service...
Severe delays to Metro passengers this morning
