I think it would make more sense provided the 687 ran throughout the day

That was (and is) the problem.

The 687 was hourly, which was fine for the Hexham part of the route, but the Corbridge section wouldn't support the frequency.
Of course, by reducing the frequency also reduced the ridership as it wasn't 'every hour on the hour'.

I understand why the 687 was reorganised to run off the 686, but it has further reduced the regular users.

I don't know how popular the Acomb section of the 682 is, but I saw that it was reduced in frequency during the recent closure of Hexham railway bridge which meant extended journey times due to the diversion via Two Mile Cottages.

The last time I had the 682 from Acomb (just before it was reduced from being hourly) it was packed

I think tampering with the 21s would be best avoided. We've had a system of 21/21A/21B/22 and so on in years gone by. The 21 did Newcastle-Chester-le-Street, 21A to Houghton-le-Spring and 21B to Witton Gilbert, 15 minute frequency I believe, with two terminating at Chester every hour and one 21A/21B hourly. Combing the 21 and 34s may seem cost effective, but I think it's easier to have them separate. 21 is regarded as the flagship route at Go North East, while the 34/34A are just a local service with a significantly lower PVR.

Your suggestion for the X21 would defeat the point of it being an express to Newcastle from Chester-le-Street. Including the Metrocentre would probably increase the journey time from 30 minutes to about 45 at the least I'd expect. Both the X21 and X22 can receive heavy loadings on their own on Saturdays, especially mornings and evenings, and combining the two would either push people onto the X24 for the Metrocentre (inconvenient to the majority, as a lot of school students use the X22 and use solely Go North East, with the appropriate bus passes, but both the X22 and X24 get a similar number of OAPs) or result in people being left behind.

As for the X50 idea, I don't think there is as much demand for a 15-minute ''fast'' frequency between Durham and Chester, but mainly the latter and Newcastle. The 21s to Durham used to operate every 10 minutes until late 2012 when service revisions coincided with the arrival of the Hybrids, and I can vaguely remember the X21 being increased to every 30 minutes while the 21 went to a lower frequency of every 15 minutes. Might be wrong, but that's my recollection of things.

I can understand your logic with wanting to combine the likes of the 34 and 50, which in itself I think is a good idea and might be more plausible than combining the 21 and 34s, but in terms of fast services, I think Newcastle needs to be focused on more than Durham.

I can remember a frequency increase on the X21 too. I think it was the time when the X20 was withdrawn so the X21 was increased to every 30 minutes as opposed to being hourly.

Each operated on a 30 min frequency for the majority of their existence, with the likes of the 724 supplementing the service along Durham Road and extending to Bishop.

Didn't GNE claim that 21A and 22 etc were too confusing for customers, hence the standard 21 number. I still think there's room to improve the 21, it still suffers from bad delays and bunching up. Short runs from Newcstle to Low Fell/Allerdene would help

One from me, speaking of old Durham Rd days (a quicker bus to Beamish!)

Hourly and School holidays/Summer only.

X28

Eldon Sq - Gateshead - Low Fell - Birtley - Ouston then direct to Beamish. (Basically a twist on the old 728 and 709 routes cut off at Beamish)

Yeah, then renumbered everything as the 21 and caused all sorts of confusion - with punters using the number and not ultimate destination.
So they split them as the 21 and 22 and then got rid of the 22 - going back to the one number system again.
Since talking to my fellow neighbours they all told me what theyd like or suggest as a bus service.

All this suggestion is a recipe for disaster, Most journeys at Peak Times on a B9 are full on both decks. Sticking Streelite's on there is just diabolical.
And who wants a bus from Hadrian Park to Allenheads anyway?
The suggestion that a TEN should run up to Allendale and Allenheads (not to mention Battle Hill and Hadrian Park) is a recipe for disaster IMO.

By all means schedule connecting buses, but what happens when there are delays somewhere along the route?

As it is, Hexham usually keeps a spare to slot into the TEN route when the incoming bus is delayed.

Adding the section up to Allendale and Allenheads would inevitably add more delays (I'm not talking about extended running times but those unpredictable delays).

PVR would be in the region of 7 or 8, With Half-Hourly frequencys during the day, And Hourly frequency's in Early Mornings and Late Evenings running Wardley - Metrocentre only.
Sundays will be Hourly on the Full route to South Shields, Reverting to only Wardley - Metrocentre in the evening

The last departure from the Metrocentre to South Shields will be 9:40 PM on Weekdays and Saturdays and 5:40 PM on Sundays.

South Tyne Lad

I saw this come up somewhere on Facebook and I wonder if you could do something like this to improve the services - http://www.shieldsgazette.com/news/local...-1-8054724. Seems people aren't happy with the links to the hospital so maybe you could have:

14 - South Shields-Ocean Road-South Tyneside Hospital then fast to Jarrow and Hebburn then goes to Wardley/Ellen Wilkinson Estate then it goes onto Newcastle direct via Heworth and Gateshead to provide a faster link from Wardley than the 57 and also from areas in South Tyneside. Or it could even replace the 69 which would make sense.
15 - As you said

They mention in there about the reliability of the 88/88A too so that needs to be sorted out.

Only thing is even though the metro is crap I'm not sure how many people would choose the bus over it to be fair.

I think these are actually sensible suggestions, but just one small problem, what would you re number the current 14 and 15/15A

South Tyne Service 88/88A South Shields - Chichester - South Tyneside Hospital - Simonside - South Leam - Jarrow - Jarrow Estates - Hebburn - Monkton Lane - Lukes Lane

Current Versa + 1 Solar allocation is replaced with a 11x Optare Versa Allocation off the Citylink 58, A extra Versa is allocated to allow more running time.
Next Stop Announcements will also be provided to make use of the NSA's inside these Versa's, Free Wifi is also provided, Upgrading the spec on this route.

Section between Jarrow and Lukes Lane is downgraded to every 30 Mins, Due to the less passengers using this section. A quicker and already present alternative is via the 27, Which serves Hebburn and Monkton Lane estates.

I can’t see the point in reducing the frequency of the 88/88A to every 30mins between Jarrow and Lukes Lane Estate. That proposal will leave massive sections of Hebburn with buses running to a reduced one per hour frequency in each direction. The same reduced service would affect areas of employment in Jarrow.

Contrary to your view that the 27 will provide an alternative this is clearly not the case as the Crusader goes nowhere near vast sections of Hebburn. Here are my concerns:

One of South Tyneside’s employment hotspots is served by the 88A at locations on both sides of Blackett Street consisting of Jarrow Business Centre and Viking Business Park. People employed at those locations would see a significant reduction in travel opportunities with the current two buses per hour service reduced to one per hour frequency in each direction. Wagonway Road Industrial Estate in Hebburn is another area of employment served by the 88A although I accept that customers could walk from the 88 route to get there. Indeed the post code NE31 1SP on the 88A route has a very high density of employment mainly around the A&P Docks area.

New social housing has recently been built at School Street with more development due on Argyle Street hopefully increasing demand for bus use on the 88. Lyon Street, Ellison Street and the surrounding area all with a low car ownership ratio will suffer a significant service frequency reduction as will the remainder of the Hebburn Quay Village. Victoria Road West, Crawley Avenue, Toner Avenue, Hartleburn Avenue and part of the Lakes Estates will have their connections to the remainder of South Tyneside reduced in frequency.

The current 88 serves the Hebburn Cemetery and Reyrolle Sports Ground on a half hour each direction service. With your proposal this would be reduced to once an hour each way and when you see elderly people (as I have)  that have had to wait up to half an hour after attending a funeral getting on the bus I would not want to be the person proposing a once per hour service on the 88 (supplement by the 515).

The unique selling point of the South Tyne 88/88A is that it offers a through service at Lukes Lane. The through service provides a clock and anti-clock circle around the southern part of Hebburn on a half hour each way frequency. This circle around Hebburn is an essential service used by people to get to the shops, doctors surgeries and the medical centre. The circle route currently also allows students from the town’s main Comprehensive School on Campbell Park Road to travel in both directions on a half hour frequency. The Lakes School is served in a similar way. This through service has been developed and improved over the years by Go North East with the input of other stakeholders and to cut such a service would undermine all of that hard work.

Lukes Lane would still have two buses per hour with your proposal and it could probably survive with that service. However being an area of low car ownership Lukes Lane is likely to generate enough revenue to justify the current service.
You say that passenger numbers on the Jarrow to Lukes Lane section is lower than the section from Jarrow to South Shields. It is not just numbers of passengers that needs to be taken into account it is revenue that matters and in my experience the 88/88A benefits from a lot of short hop customers in Hebburn such as Crawley Avenue or Marine Drive to the local ASDA. Short hop fares are a good revenue stream.  I have seen many photos from a local bus enthusiast showing good loadings at Hebburn ASDA on the 88/88A.

I will never object to the frequency reduction of a service when it fails to meet revenue targets. The bus operators Commercial Team should be left to make such decisions on service reductions with the enthusiast community constructively suggesting new and enhanced services. If a reasonable profit can be achieved with 4 buses per hour and if the frequency is then reduced to 2 per hour there is a risk that a competitor could see an opportunity to step in. Alternatively Nexus could tender out some of your proposed withdrawn runs which might benefit a competitor. In any event I believe that some journeys on the 88/88A are supported by Nexus so proposing service reductions might not be as simple as your suggestion.

I do like your idea on having a standard type of vehicle on the 88/88A route. Any proposal to go all Versa working would require an alternative utilisation for the Solar that runs the morning 92 & 856 if it is no longer going to deployed on the ( 88) 88A. Perhaps suggesting a new route for the Solar or finding an existing route where it can earn its keep during the day would help.

Reliability would be catastrophic on this, The current 88 ( Which covers half of the places shown ) suffers from Major Delays pretty much every Evening Peak ( Also includes School finishing time )

Shields to the Hospital, Whitleas , Biddick Hall , Bolden Asda and Fellgate is covered by the 5 every half a hour and everything else bar the Hospital is also served by the 50 every half and hour.

Stagecoach have a big presence in Most of the inner Shields areas, Enough to make a competitors route unviable.

Would be pointless as stagecoach are pretty reliable and the gne 88 are terrible

Some ideas for the East Durham area linking it with Tyneside and Teesside

New X61
Sunderland-Grangetown-Seaham-Dalton Park-Woods Terrace then same as current 61 to Station Estate

Modified 61
Same as now but from Woods Terrace it would go round Cornwall Estate the opposite way to it's current route to Station Estate

The combined frequency would keep to the current 15 minutes and they would interwork from Station Estate...On a Sunday somehow interwork X61 with the 60 to give Murton a service to Seaham on a Sunday

Modified 265
Only change being would be to modify the route to go back round Cornwall Estate

Modify the timings of the 202 and 265 to give a roughly 20 minute combined w/X61 service between Seaham and Murton

New X8
Sunderland-Grangetown-Ryhope-New Seaham-Dalton Park-Peterlee-Billingham-Middlesbrough

Modified X10
Only change being, it goes to Dalton Park

X8 and X10 would be half hourly at Dalton Park giving Tyneside and Teesside a direct link to said retail park

Modified X36
Sunderland-Grangetown-Ryhope-A19-Dalton-Park-Peterlee-Horden-Blackhall-Hartlepool

X36 would be hourly initially to guage if it would be a success

[b]Modified X1[b]
As it is to Hetton, then split it, send 2 to Dalton Park via the 265 route(excl. East Moor Est.)
