A simple suggestion really, just an extension of the first Sapphire 7 run into Darlington Town Centre on Sunday mornings which currently start at Harrowgate Hill, Ashleigh House, it would run at the following times:

Woodham, Stag Lane - 0834
Aycliffe Town Centre - 0842
Aycliffe Village - 0848
Harrowgate Hill - 0854
Darlington Tubwell Row - 0904

This is one of those suggestions I will have to continue dreaming about as I can't see us in Aycliffe getting an earlier service to Darlington on a Sunday morning than we currently do which is service 8 leaving Aycliffe Town Centre at 09:31.
MAX X20 - to run limited stop between Wansbeck Hospital and Newcastle Haymarket bus station, to improve journey times for passengers to/from Northumberland. Calling at the following points only:
Wansbeck Hospital
Ashington Bus Station
Ashington Hirst Welfare Centre
North Seaton Academy
North Seaton Fairfield Drive
Regent Centre Interchange*
Gosforth Brandling Arms*
Newcastle Barras Bridge southbound only*
Newcastle Haymarket Bus Station
*Towards Newcastle, buses call to set down only. Towards Northumberland, buses call to pick up only. This is to reduce idling times when "short hop" fares are issued, when passengers can use another service.

Service 1 - Later journeys on Sundays and Bank Holidays, buses running until about 2000, giving 2 additional buses in each direction. 1745 will be last bus to Cresswell, and 1845/1945 will be for Ashington only. At present, last bus from Blyth is 1745, and Ashington at 1816.

.
Best way to deal with "short hop" fares is to have a 'no change' policy for fares under a certain amount with drivers under order to use discretion where necessary (minors, vulnerable passengers etc) and not just decide to give no change because they can't be bothered even if the bus is running slightly late. Basically, if someone goes legging it at the last minute with a £20 for a short hop to the examples given above, then the driver could refuse the fare unless the punter wanted a very expensive bus ride! If however a minor or other type of vulnerable passenger did the same, the driver could politely ask if they had anything smaller but if not, still issue the fare and give change

I use the X20 several times a week and don't think going "limited stop" would speed it up. Stopping a couple of times when negotiating the roads out of Ashington pales into insignificance when compared to the time that can be spent sitting in traffic jams at peak times. If any time is lost in Ashington at bus stops it can be made up on the dual carriageways later.

People catching an express bus to go 2 stops along the road does annoy me though... Perhaps on corridors where there are other buses Express services should have single fare levels that are more expensive than local services. That way people will only catch the express for a short journey once. It wouldn't stop concessionary pass holders though.
A New 46 timetable would be introduced meaning that the PVR would be six because the buses would run through to the General Hospital every 15 minutes Monday-Friday daytime (every 15 minutes Great Park-Haymarket on a Saturday and every 30 minutes Great Park-Haymarket giving Melbury an Evening and Sunday bus. To do this 1772 and 1774 would transfer to Blyth in return for 2801 and 2802. 2801, 2802 and spare 2815 would transfer to Jesmond with 2801 and 2802 gaining 46 branding and WiFi while 2815 would gain generic NHS branding and would be spare for the 46/553. The 51 would also become half-hourly full route (hourly full route on Evenings and Sundays), the 53 timetable would alter to allow West Allotment a bus every 15 minutes. The 553 would be the same Monday-Fridays as it would be on Saturdays with an hourly service full route on Sundays with no short journeys.
Therefore to solve this issue 2801, 2802, 2842, 2844, 2845 and 2847 would be on the 46.
2806, 2824, 2834 and 2840 would be on the 55.
2601 would be on the 6.
2825 and 2846 would be on the 553
1761, 1770, 2870 and 2871 would be on the 51.
2815 and 2848 would be spare.
2870 and 2871 would be on the 18/18A Evenings and Sundays
2601, 2801, 2802 and 2806 would run the 32/32A.

24 New Streetlites would come for Eco Green Killingworth routes 52/53/54 also allowing them to be every 20 minutes. The 52 would also be extended to Blyth via the following route:

2816, 2821, 2831, 1772 and 1774(transferred above) and 1791 would be freed up. 1772 would be used on the 472 and 1774 would become a spare midibus at Jesmond.
1791 would move to Ashington to allow for the new 517 Alnwick Town Service running every 45 minutes on the following route:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Alnmou...933302!3e0

The X21/X22 would be modified so that it runs more frequently at every 15 minutes each with the X22 being extended to Cresswell va the following route;https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Ashington,+Northumberland,+Ashington/Cresswell+Towers+Holiday+Park/@55.2176057,-1.5775348,5299m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m29!4m28!1m20!1m1!1s0x487e0db1c94795f9:0xa437bfed3bbd4191!2m2!1d-1.567872!2d55.183704!3m4!1m2!1d-1.547339!2d55.1853959!3s0x487e0d97b07ed2c1:0xa6eb962452f51a33!3m4!1m2!1d-1.5717107!2d55.2112643!3s0x487e0dd6abf1c259:0x3e96ee471bb7d032!3m4!1m2!1d-1.5273348!2d55.2109865!3s0x487e0dfed80907af:0x5f4c09477c938942!1m5!1m1!1s0x487e0e16c5efb541:0xffe5b824445fb9b!2m2!1d-1.5431734!2d55.2324425!3e0
This would make the PVR 24 with the extra eight buses being 1465, 1466 and 1506-1511 transferred from Darlington, 1424-1428 and 1463 would transfer to Jesmond replacing 7467-7471 and 7473. This would mean that 14 Eco Green Streetlites would come to Darlington for the 1/1B/5/5A/12/19.
The 43/44/45 branding would be applied to 1424-1428 and 1463 along with 1495-1497 and 1499 and 1500 along with 7484, 7488 and 7490-7494 and 1401 and 1402 which would be freed up later. 1419 would be branded MAX X16 and would allow the X16 to be half-hourly full route with the current short X14 journeys becoming X16

6 Streetlites would come for the 2 which would be extended to Pegswood taking an extra 7 minutes. This would allow for 1401 and 1402 would transfer to be 43/44/45 branded at Jesmond with 1403 being spare at Jesmond. Terefore Jesmond would no longer have ALX400s in its fleet except for spare 7480. 7466 would be withdrawn and 1768 and 1769 would transfer to Ashington to allow the 57/57A to be more frequent.

7 Streetlites including one spare would be branded Sapphire X23 for a new service running every 15 minutes between Newcastle and Ashington via the following route taking 49 minutes which would also allow more buses for Stannington:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Haymar...183704!3e0

NEW X17 service would run between Newcastle and Morpeth Lancaster Park/Newcastle Airport running limited stop between Newcastle Haymarket and Newcastle Airport only calling at Barras Bridge, Cowgate KFC, Kenton Bar Roundabout, Twin Farms for Bank Foot Metro, Woolsington Green Lane, Wheatsheaf Pub for Callerton Parkway Station and Premier Inn, Ponteland Road Newcastle Airport for main Premier Inn and the terminal building. 1481-1483 would be branded MAX for the journey between Haymarket and Newcastle Airport that would run every 15 minutes and the onward journey via Ponteland and Whalton would be hourly using 2816, 2821 and 2831, 1771 would transfer from Blyth for the role of X17 spare. 1480 would be MAX spare for Jesmond covering for the X16 and X17. The X17 route would be the following:

Thank you for reading Smile

Sorry but I just don't see the point in any of those suggestions and most of the routes don't make sense.

How, what is wrong with them?

A lot haha.

First of all I can't see many of them making a profit at all!

52/53/54 doesn't really need to be every 20 minutes and extended to Blyth considering there is already plenty of buses along this stretch.

Cresswell doesn't need a bus every 15 minutes, I think the 1 serving there is enough. Then I don't think the demand is there for another bus between Alnwick and Widdrington, considering there is already two buses operating along that route, along with more between Alnwick and Amble (albeit not the same route). And you are adding another bus with the new town service from Alnmouth to Alnwick which I can't see many people using either considering there are already plenty buses around the town (15, T01, T02, 472 etc.)

If you are not withdrawing the X20 then again I don't see the point in the X23 (every 15 minutes is ridiculous considering you are having a X21/X22 every 7/8 minutes!!) and does Stannington really need a bus every 15 minutes when few people use the 44 there. And the X17 every 15 minutes between Airport and town is too much as the demand isn't really there I don't think, every 60 minutes maybe at a push.

Basically they are all duplicating other routes or the frequencies are unrealistic.

It is to rival the metro

Yes but you have to consider whether or not the demand is there - I personally can't see many people using the bus so maybe trial it at 60 minutes first which is less than a risk of every 15 minutes.
I was thinking this the other night.

After GNE attempted the N58 a few year back, how do you think Arriva would fair if they tried an N38?

Same route as the 308 on Friday / Saturday nights and hourly between 00:10 and 03:10 with last service out of Newcastle at 03:10 except it would serve Battle Hill as well as Broadway / Renwick Road rather than Blyth Park to be close to other areas of Blyth.
A new service covering Wear Valley-Durham

Shildon-Auckland Park-Mickey Moor-Spennymoor-Tudhoe-Durham Gate-Croxdale-Nevilles Cross-Durham

Not sure if it would be worthwhile, but since I have lived here I have had to contend with a lack of places served from Shildon

Such a service would open links from Shildon and the sorrounding area with Durham Gate and also a link to Durham avoiding Bishop Auckland...

I wonder whether it would be worth extending the 43 to Morpeth on a Sunday daytime, to provide Cramlington with a direct link to Morpeth and Bedlington?
There is a few suggestions for North East services.
*New* X13: Newcastle - Newcastle Airport - Ponteland - Shilvington - Morpeth.
This service will create new links between Newcastle Airport and Morpeth and a extra service to Newcastle. The service will operate via the old 79 route from Ponteland, between Newcastle and Newcastle Airport the service will operate limited stop. The service will operate every 2 hours Mon - Sat daytimes using a Optare Solo.

X14: Service Withdrawn - The route is transferred to route X16.

X16: This service will continue to operate hourly, although extended to Thropton to replace service X14. The sunday service will be transferred to service X18.

*New* X19: Cobalt - Northumberland Park - Cramlington - Bedlington - Morpeth. This service will operate one journey each direction Monday to Friday peak times. This service will offer new links from Morpeth and Bedlington to Cobalt, also providing a extra service alongside service 43.

Seems pointless to withdraw the X14, as that's always been the one to serve Thropton. Why not cut the X16 and increase the X14 frequency between Morpeth and Newcastle, like it was before the X16s introduction?

"Sunday service transferred to the X18" - I'm assuming this means the newly introduced 2 hourly X14 Sunday service? The one that gives Morpeth a bus to Newcastle every half an hour?

With some X14 journeys cut previously it would make more sense to take it off and replace it with service X16. It would work if Jesmond operate the New X13 and X19 using 1 bus. Then Ashington to operate service X16 using Max E400s. And yes the recently introduced Sunday service.

I'd also cut the X16. Extend the 35 to Kirkhill and withdraw the service Woodhorn-Newbiggin.

Reinstate the 15 min frequency on 35, and have a service to Kirkhill every 30 on the single deck boards.

It's not really possible to merge the X14 and X16, as buses will have to back up on themselves through Morpeth along Curly Kews and Oldgate, or if a bus can even fit around there, around the back of Kirkhill along by Newminster School, and even then, there won't be enough time to turn around in Thropton.

Also, the X13 wouldn't work. The 79 nor the old 100 service didn't pick up passengers, so it just wouldn't be commercially viable.

I think it would make sense to just operate everything as an X14, including at the moment. I know that, going back to the days when MPDs were used on that X14/16 working, people associate the X16 with a smaller vehicle and so will aim for the bus either side. This leads to X16s often leaving Morpeth quite empty, and a whole load of people waiting for the next E400.

How would you go about doing that though? The reason, I assume, they've decided to use the X14 as the new Sunday service is so that confusion is avoided. If you had it going to the X18, you'd either run it up to Alnwick with a very odd frequency, or terminate it at Morpeth and have people asking why it isn't continuing.

I think one thing that does need to be looked at on a Sunday is introducing an X15 to Berwick.

Missed this bit off my reply earlier:

I think the only way this would realistically work is if you got the timing absolutely spot on. At the moment, I don't think the 43 does as well as it could between Bedlington and Morpeth because it is timed to arrive a minute or two before the 2, which is generally bang on time, with the 43 often late. I think it could be a very good service if thought out correctly.

If you got the timings in Bedlington towards Morpeth arriving at least 5 minutes before the following 2, it would stand a good chance, as it would pick up the passengers purely wanting to go to Morpeth, as well as giving the west of Bedlington, which is expanding, a half hourly Morpeth bus.

Edit: I'd also try and make it as 'express' as possible. Cut out the Shankhouses, Red House Farm, and Stobhill sections. Possibly also look at extending it to Silverlink at the southern end.
